Republicans look to turn focus to national debt in new online campaign
Republicans will debut a new Web video Monday that hammers President Obama over the mounting federal debt.
The video and a new set of online advertisements will criticize the president as having "broken promises" on the deficit.
In the commercial, a series of clips showing the president pledging fiscal responsibility are contrasted onscreen with a tally of the federal debt growing higher and higher. As clips show the president pledging to go "line by line" through the federal budget, news articles highlighting the lavish General Services Administration conference in Las Vegas and the bankruptcy of failed green energy company Solyndra — which received federally backed loans — float across the screen. The messaging will combat an effort from the Obama campaign to frame the week's political discussion around Mitt Romney's time leading private equity firm Bain Capital. In a new television commercial released Monday, the president's reelection team features former steelworkers of a company closed during Romney's tenure who criticize the presumptive Republican nominee as a corporate raider.
