home mortgage insurance FAQ
PMI or mortgage insurance covers your lack of putting down 20%. Should you default, MPI would pay the shortfall of the downpayment ONLY....not the entire mortgage. Homeowners insurance covers your belongings and the structure.
An agent should come out to calculate the cost to rebuild the home - it's part of buying the policy, so no extra charge.
That same agent should be willing to take the time and sit down with you, and explain which coverages you need, and
Nope.
Just mortgage interest and property taxes. Any points you paid on your mortgage in 2006 are also deductable.

Home truths hit hard
Kim would like a home to call her own.
In her mid-50s and divorced, she is an apartment-dweller who longs for a nice little bungalow -- preferably on the prairie.
"I'd dearly like to live on the outskirts of the city, but I'd also need to own a car again, and I'd like to figure out whether that's at all feasible," she says, adding she'd buy a used car for less than $15,000.

5 Big Banks, States Agree on $25 Billion Home Mortgage Deal
Five big U.S. banks accused of abusive mortgage practices have agreed to a $25 billion government settlement that may help roughly one million borrowers but is no magic bullet for the ailing housing market.
Thursday’s announcement brings an end to 16 months of negotiations that culminated in a tense week of round-the-clock deal-making. The result is a record state-federal settlement that will deliver wide, but not deep, relief to U.S. homeowners.
